Private Security

In response to the growth of crime and the increasing pressure on police resources, some neighbourhoods have resorted to hiring private security officers to patrol their localities. A British survey estimated there were over 1000 private security patrols in existence in Great Britain (Birch, 1993). However, private security officers most salient contribution to surveillance is not the patrolling of public streets for householders, but the policing of private property. It has been estimated that the number of private security personnel now outnumbers police officers in Great Britain (Jones & Newburn, 1995).
